Tasty fare at Teikoku's new brunch buffet

By Amy A. Winnemore
Teikoku in Newtown Square has long been a favorite lunch and dinner destination to experience the striking flavors of Thailand mixed with the influence of Japanese cuisine. Now visitors can sample their favorite fare during the restaurant’s new Sunday brunch buffet. From 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., guests can choose Asian dishes as well as traditional American breakfast entrées.

During a recent visit to Teikoku, my husband Kevin and I walked past the wall of rain chains that collect falling water as it passes through hanging copper cups that drip into a stone garden. This was going to be a tranquil and peaceful dining experience; definitely different from other brunch buffets.

After ordering a mimosa, our waitress Nina graciously explained all the types of fare. I was impressed by the wide array of Asian cuisine including the chicken and salmon teriyaki, sautéed shrimp and chicken Pad Thai. At $25 per person for adults and $12 for children under 10, the cost is comparable with many nearby brunch buffets.

It can never be too early for sushi, so I selected several types of sushi rolls including salmon and tuna. Adding some dumplings, vegetable fried rice, salmon teriyaki and jumbo shrimp to my plate and I was ready for brunch. My husband Kevin decided to try breakfast favorites like the French Toast, sausage, bacon, yogurt and fresh fruit and the make-your-own omelet station.

The food was delicious and we both went back for seconds; sushi rolls for me and French Toast for Kevin. The delicate sushi rolls were fresh and creative and the salmon teriyaki was tangy and sweet.

General Manager Katrin Kanikkeberg hopes to regularly add new dishes to the buffet. Even though we were full, she reminded us to try the dessert table selections which included mouth-watering mini cheesecakes and Petite Fours.

With scrumptious cuisine, lovely décor, reasonable prices and welcoming staff, Teikoku’s Sunday brunch buffet is a must.

If you go: Teikoku is at 5492 West Chester Pike in Newtown Square. The Sunday brunch buffet is $25 per person and $12 for children under 10 years of age, plus tax and gratuity. Soft drinks and coffee are included. Specially priced Mimosa and Bloody Mary Bar are also available. Call 610-644-8270 or visit www.teikokurestaurant.com.

A stellar 'Philly POPS Christmas' at the Kimmel Center

With twinkling lights, classic Christmas carols and even a visit from Santa, the audience was swept up in the holiday spirit watching “A Philly Pops Christmas Spectacular Sounds of the Season” last weekend at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia. Music Director Maestro Michael Krajewski conducted the sensational show featuring over 300 musicians and singers, including the 65-piece Pops orchestra, guest vocalist Justin Hopkins, organist Peter Richard Conte, the Philly POPS Festival Chorus, the Philadelphia Boys Choir and the African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas Gospel Choir. The Pops sounded exquisite as they performed amongst the twinkling trees on the stage and sparkling lighted snowflakes above. Hopkins's booming bass baritone voice was perfect as he narrated "The Grinch Medley." Describing the furry, green, grumpy recluse living above the town of Whoville (on Mount Crumpet) , Hopkins was superb as he sang "You're a Mean One, Mr....

'Raiders of the Lost Ark in Concert' at the Mann Center for the Performing Arts

The crashing of the massive boulder thundering through the collapsing temple filled the TD Pavilion at the Mann Center for the Performing Arts  recently.  The adventures of Indiana Jones were  projected on a 40-foot-high screen as part of the Mann Center’s “Raiders of the Lost Ark in Concert.” "Raiders," the summer blockbuster and top-grossing film of 1981, kicked off this season's Movies @ the Mann series. With the Reading Symphony Orchestra performing the score live, it brought a new found excitement to re-watching Steven Spielberg's classic about the archaeology professor and his quest to recover the legendary Ark of the Covenant before it falls into the hands of the Nazis. Audience members were part of a full sensory experience as the orchestra, conducted by  Andrew Constantine,  heightened the excitement and anxiety as they performed the Academy Award-nominated score by John Williams. Even though I’ve seen the movie many times, listening to the...
