With a flick of the wrist, the green and black cornhole bags flew through the air and landed with a recurring thud before sliding across the board. The new cornhole set, as well as a covered outdoor bulletin board, were both designed and built by Charlie Stallings, a member of Boy Scout Troop 300 in Havertown, for Aronimink Swim Club. The items are part of Stallings' service project to achieve Eagle Scout, the highest and final rank attainable in Boy Scouts.
"Aronimink is lucky to be part of such a wonderful community. We love to form partnerships that are mutually beneficial like the Eagle Scout bulletin board project Charlie created this summer. Thanks to Charlie, his parents and his team for their hard work and beautiful craftsmanship," said Kiley Cappello, president of the Aronimink Swim Club Board of Directors.
Stallings, a scout for nearly a decade, was required to plan, develop and lead a project which would be helpful to his community.
"I knew I wanted to build something," said Stallings. "My mom and dad helped me immensely."
After receiving approval for his proposal from both the scouts and the swim club board, Stallings, went to work on completing his Eagle Scout project. The path to an Eagle Scout Award requires a number of merit badges and completing a significant community service project which necessitates planning, leadership and execution.
With assistance from his fellow Troop 300 scouts, Stallings installed the covered bulletin board by the club's lower picnic area. The new addition will help showcase all the club's upcoming events and news. The cornhole set, featuring the ASC logo and painted in the club's colors of green, white and black, was a straightaway hit with the lifeguards.
Popular at backyard family get-togethers and Phillies tailgate parties, cornhole is a game in which teams take turns throwing fabric corn-filled bags at an inclined board with a hole in its far end. The goal is to score points by either landing a bag on the board or through the hole.
Stallings advice to fellow scouts contemplating achieving Eagle rank, "don't put it off. I'm incredibly happy to have my project done at 16 and not having to wait until a month before my 18th birthday.
In addition to scouting, Stallings enjoys competition shooting and video games.
